Matt Umholtz brings over two decades of experience in the payroll and human capital management industry, combining the grit of a founder with the precision of a growth operator. After launching his career in sales at a large publicly traded payroll company — where he was known by his employee number more than his name — Matt realized he was meant to build something of his own. In 2012, he founded PaySphere, a payroll and HR tech firm that would go on to be recognized multiple times on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies in America.
Matt’s entrepreneurial background is rare in this industry — he’s one of the few who has bootstrapped, scaled, and successfully exited a business in this space. That same founder’s mindset drives his leadership today at AllianceHCM, where he leads all go-to-market functions and plays a pivotal role in shaping strategy, culture, and execution.
His long-standing friendship with Alliance founder Randy Norwood — forged in 2010 — ultimately led to the merger of their companies in 2020. Since then, Alliance has emerged as one of the most tenured, fastest-growing, and customer-obsessed HCM providers in the market, particularly among America’s leading restaurant and franchise brands.
Matt’s leadership mantra, “Never Just A Number,” reflects his passion for service, accountability, and creating lasting impact for clients and team members alike.
When he’s not leading the charge at Alliance, you can find Matt cheering at Irish dance competitions with his daughter, catching redfish with his sons, or chasing fair winds and following seas on an ocean getaway with his wife, Jesse.
